Sancerre Presses Oaks Claims

Thursday, 22nd May 2014

Well-bred Kiwi filly Sancerre (O'Reilly-Vouvray, by Zabeel) should qualify for next week's Gr1 Queensland Oaks following her impressive win at Ipswich yesterday, reports NZ Racing Desk. Sancerre earned $11,050 for the win boosting her total prize money to $25,382, which in most years would place her below the qualifying threshold for the Oaks. "They can run 18 from the 2400 metres and when you take out those with less prize money and those who have indicated they won't start she should just make it," Brisbane Race Club racing manager Bart Sinclair said. Sancerre lived up to her sizable reputation when defeating Generis Heart and Sam's Town by 3-lengths in the Schweppes Handicap over 2200 metres. Trained by Cambridge horseman Tony Pike, Sancerre is a daughter of champion sire O'Reilly and Zabeel mare Vouvray, winner of the 2004 edition of the Queensland Oaks. Despite never winning another race, Vouvray showed her class by placing at Gr1 level on three subsequent outings, in the Mackinnon Stakes and Ranvet Stakes behind Grand Armee, and in the BMW behind champion mare Makybe Diva.
