Cox Plate Aim For Super Cool

Wednesday, 28th May 2014

Trainer Mark Kavanagh has confirmed that Super Cool (Fastnet Rock-Queen Mother, by Kingmambo) will be set for the Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 25 October, reports horseracing.com.au. Following a tough spring campaign which culminated in a ninth placing behind Fiorente in last year's Melbourne Cup, Kavanagh elected to give the 4YO gelding an extended break with the aim of maximising the horse's longevity. He said at the time, "He's a gelding and you can get longevity out of them if you look after them and that's the way we have decided to go." Kavanagh said the Australian Cup winner's primary spring objectives would be the Cox Plate and the Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day. "Those two will be his best goals," Kavanagh said. "I'll discuss the matter with his owners in the coming weeks before the noms shut, but that's the way I'll certainly be looking at this stage." Kavanagh explained that the son of Fastnet Rock had derived plenty of benefit from his lengthy stint on the sidelines and had been back in work for about ten weeks. "He was in a situation where he was a bit jaded and needed a longer spell after the spring," Kavanagh said. "He's 100% right now. He's done really well and he'll have a couple of weeks rest now and then be back and get ready for a serious campaign in the spring." Watch Super Cool's 2013 Gr1 Australian Cup win on TVN below.
