MM National Broodmare Day-2: 800k For Star Witness Dam

Friday, 30th May 2014

The demand for high quality mares continued on day two of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast yesterday. Group winning mare Leone Chiara, the very last lot through the sale ring, was the day's top seller when knocked down to her former trainer Danny O'Brien for $800,000. The Lion Hunter mare is best known as the dam of dual Gr1-winning sprinter Star Witness, who stands at Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley. This is also the family of Gr2 winners Ferocity & Chinchilla Rose, and Listed winner Chiaramonte. Consigned by Almavale Bloodstock, Leone Chiara was presented in foal to Darley's exciting first season sire Sepoy. Two other mares on the day - Gr1 producer Disguise and Gr2 winner Majestic Music - sold for $750,000. Disguise (Grand Lodge), the dam of two stakes winners including the recently retired multiple Gr1-winning mare Appearance, was purchased from the draft of Kulani Park by Kitchwin Hills in foal to top stallion Fastnet Rock. Young bloodstock agent James Harron was active again purchasing Majestic Music from the draft of Newgate Farm. The Al Maher mare is in foal to former champion colt Pierro. Rounding out the top five sellers on the day was Gr1 winning Redoute's Choice mare Fashions Afield ($625,000 to Baramul Stud) and Elusive Quality's stakes winning daughter Nocturnelle ($600,000 to Arrowfield Stud). Following yesterday's sale, the auction gross soared past $52 million at an average price of $146,442 and clearance rate of 89 per cent.
