At Riccarton Park in New Zealand, Waikato Stud's Gr1 Australian Guineas-winning stallion Pins (Snippets-No Finer, by Kaoru Star) added a Group success when 7YO mare Karla Bruni (Pins (AUS) 1996 out of Cantante (NZ) 1999, by Centaine) scored by 0.5-length for trainer Roydon Bergerson in the NZ$100,000 Gr3 Winter Cup (1600m) for 3YO+, over fellow 7YO mare Marotiri Miss (Al Akbar-Rainbeau, by Oregon) & 7YO gelding Ric O'Shea (O'Reilly-Fellowship, by Success Express). This was successive Winter Cup victories for Karla Bruni who took her record to 7 wins and 8 placings from 38 starts for NZ$188,960 earnings. "After last year we thought we would come back – this is the race we had set her for," trainer and part-owner Roydon Bergerson said. "She won't be back next year, she'll be in foal to Savabeel. She's been a lovely mare to look after and this could be her last race."
