Sultanina Wins UK Gr1 Nassau Stakes
On the final day of Glorious Goodwood in the UK, multiple Gr1-winning Darley stallion New Approach (Galileo-Park Express, by Ahonoora) celebrated a Gr1 success when smart 4YO mare Sultanina (New Approach-Soft Centre, by Zafonic) scored by 1.5-lengths for trainer John Gosden in the £200,000 Gr1 Nassau Stakes (10 furlongs) for 3YO+ fillies and mares, over fellow 4YO mares Narniyn (Dubawi-Narmina, by Alhaarth) & Venus de Milo (Duke of Marmalade-Inchmahome, by Galileo). This was an outstanding performance by Sultanina who achieved the rare feat of a Gr1 victory at just her fourth career start. She took her record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 Pinnacle Stakes) and 1 placing (the Gr2 Lancashire Oaks) from 4 starts for £172,377 earnings. This was the third straight Nassau for trainer John Gosden following wins by The Fugue in 2012 and Winsili last year. "This filly is very classy and Philippa (Cooper, of owners-breeders Normandie Stud) bred her down the road, just 11 miles from here, and she always told me this filly was the best and I could never work it out," Gosden told Sky Sports. "I didn't run her until this year as a four-year-old. She's gone and won a maiden, a Group Three, second in a Group Two and now won a Group One, so it's unbelievable." He added, "We're going to enter her on Tuesday in the fillies' and mares' race on Champions Day in October."
