First Victorian Winner For Darley
Smart Exceed And Excel colt Orujo became the first Victorian winner to carry the royal blue silks of Godolphin since its rebranding from Darley on 1 August, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Orujo showed significant promise during his 2YO season, finishing runner-up in both the Listed Talindert Stakes and St Albans Stakes in the autumn, and Godolphin are hoping he can step up to that level again in the spring. "We originally had this horse entered to race on Saturday at Moonee Valley but he drew the car-park so we elected to keep him for today," said Godolphin stable representative Jason Walsh. "It's great to win our first race as Godolphin with a Sheikh Mohammed home-bred." Walsh added, "Much of the old Darley structure and systems stay the same, and this colt has been identified as a horse with Listed or Group Three ability, so we'll look for a race like this in the near future." From the Canny Lad mare Rum Cruise, Orujo is a three-quarter brother to Listed Hawkesbury Guineas winner Limes (Commands) and boasts Gr1 winner Happy Sailing (Coolmore Classic) as his second dam.
