Dan Excel Gallops At Rosehill

Friday, 8th August 2014

Jockey Tommy Berry was reunited with star Hong Kong galloper Dan Excel (Shamardal-Love Excelling, by Polish Precedent) in trackwork at Rosehill Gardens yesterday, reports racingandsports.com.au. It was the first time Berry has been aboard the son of Shamardal since winning the Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup in May. Dan Excel has been sent to Australia by trainer John Moore for the Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 25 October. Berry said Dan Excel did some pace work but he was impressed with how he went about the work. "He's got a bit of condition on him which I haven't seen him with before," said Berry. "In Hong Kong they're in a box 12 months of the year. He's been out in a paddock and enjoyed himself. He's let down well." He added, "I gave him a bit of pace work. He pulled-up pretty good in the wind as I was expecting him to have a bigger blow than he did. He's definitely fitter than he looks and I believe he's come back in good order." Dan Excel is expected to make his Australian debut in the Gr2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on 6 September.
