Smoko Wins Listed Belmont Newmarket
At Belmont in West Australia, Arrowfield Stud's Gr1-winning & dual Gr1-placed stallion Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a black-type quinella when exciting 5YO gelding Smoko (Snitzel-London Lights, by Bletchingly) scored by 3-lengths for trainers Ross and Clint Price in the $100,000 Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m) for 3YO+, over fellow 5YO gelding Dominating (Snitzel-Red Princess, by Red Ransom) & 6YO mare Celebrity Miss (More Than Ready-Miss Margaret, by Marscay). This was the first stakes victory for Smoko who boosted his outstanding record to 6 wins and 1 placing (the Listed Beaufine Stakes) from 7 starts for $221,450 earnings. "William (Pike) had to use a bit of petrol to get to the front but the horse is able to that at both ends of the race," co-trainer Clint Price told The West Australian. "This is the special thing about this horse." Price said Smoko was only a 50-50 chance of lining up in a fortnight against Barakey and Mr Moet in the weight-for-age $100,000 Goodwood Sprint (1300m). Smoko is owned by Frank Fiore who purchased the gelding for $75,000 at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Bellerive Stud. He is the last foal from the Bletchingly mare London Lights who died in 2013. London Lights has produced 7 winners including Gr1 Flight Stakes winner Only A Lady (Sir Tristram) & Listed Dermody Stakes winner Lisson Grove (Dehere). Smoko is Snitzel's 23rd individual stakes winner.
