Spellbinder Has Gr1 Makfi In Her Sights

Tuesday, 12th August 2014

Jason Bridgman is hoping that smart Kiwi galloper Spellbinder (O'Reilly-Scenic Sprint, by Scenic) can resume with a victory on Saturday to justify his Gr1 ambitions for the mare, reports NZ Racing Desk. "She would need to win the Foxbridge Plate on Saturday to get into the Makfi - she would need nine or 10 points just to sneak in – but she has to make the Foxbridge field and there are a lot of horses heading there," he said. "If she can't get in then we'll have to change her spring targets and look at other options." Bridgman added, "We gave her an exhibition gallop the other day (at Avondale) and she worked really well. She's in tip-top order and is more robust now." Spellbinder proved herself one of the better fillies in New Zealand last season winning 4 of her 8 starts. The daughter of champion sire O'Reilly recorded wins in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes and Karaka Mile, as well as a Gr1-placing in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas behind stable-mate Costa Viva.
