Avdulla To Partner Lucia Valentina In Trial

Wednesday, 13th August 2014

Jockey Brenton Avdulla will make the trip to Newcastle this morning to ride Caulfield Cup hopeful Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn, by Montjeu) in a barrier trial for trainer Kris Lees, reports racingandsports.com.au. Lucia Valentina will contest an Open trial over 950m on the course proper as she continues her build-up to the spring. The daughter of Savabeel was an impressive winner of the Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes and was also placed in the Gr1 Australian Oaks in the autumn before being sent to the spelling paddock. She will resume in either the Gr2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm or the Gr3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Randwick on 23 August, before venturing to Melbourne to prepare for the Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on 18 October. "I figure she will get around 51.5kg or 52kg in the Caulfield Cup," Lees said. "That would give us a couple of options and Brenton could certainly ride at that weight. Of course that's a fair way down the track. As a four-year-old now, the mare will be taking on seasoned horses and has to prove she can handle that." He added, "On the form she showed last season, I'm optimistic she will take the next step. Obviously, there's no doubting her ability."
