Possible Goodwood Target For Smoko

Wednesday, 13th August 2014

Exciting West Australian sprinters Smoko and Barakey are set to clash in the Listed Goodwood Sprint (1300m) at Belmont on 23 August. Smoko's trainer Ross Price told RSN's Racing Ahead that he is considering targeting the weight-for-age Goodwood on Saturday week, while Barakey, winner of the 2012 Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes, is expected to make his reappearance in the race. "He's a very smart sprinter, and he's doing everything right at this stage," said Price. "We may go into the Goodwood on Saturday week over 1300 metres. It is a weight-for-age race so I just need to talk to the handicapper and find out what the penalty might be if he does happen to win that race, because you just have to be a little bit careful going through your grades that you don't throw away too much." He added, "Barakey will be back for that race and everybody is talking up the clash over here if he does happen to start and Barakey is in it as well. They are both pretty good sprinters and it would be good on equal weights and a mouth-watering challenge, but we've still got to be careful on what we actually throw away if we do happen to win that." Smoko, winner of the Listed Belmont Newmarket last Saturday, boasts an outstanding record of 6 wins from 7 starts to date. By Snitzel, he is the last foal from the Bletchingly mare London Lights who died in 2013. London Lights has produced 7 winners including Gr1 Flight Stakes winner Only A Lady (Sir Tristram) & Listed Dermody Stakes winner Lisson Grove (Dehere).
