Monteux Impresses On Debut

Thursday, 14th August 2014

Well-bred colt Monteux (Medaglia d'Oro-Kylikwong, by Red Ransom) showed he could be a force in the upcoming 3YO spring features with a brilliant debut win over 1400m at Bendigo yesterday. The 3YO is by Medaglia d'Oro out of multiple Gr1-placed filly Kylikwong, a sister to 2010 Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy. Racing in the red and white silks of owner Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds, the $370,000 Easter yearling purchase let down with a powerful finish out wide to score by a widening 0.5-length margin over Royal Ocean and Faith And Fury. Monteux is clearly held in high regard by connections with trainer Peter Moody nominating him for the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on 11 October. Monteux's strong finishing burst impressed young jockey Chad Schofield, who was celebrating his first win since returning from seven weeks on the sidelines with a neck injury. "He jumped really well and put himself in a lovely position," said Schofield. "He didn't feel like he was going to go anywhere, but as soon as I eased him into the clear and put one around his tail he really surged to the line. He gave me a good feel." He added, "He's definitely one I'd like to stay with, that's for sure."
