Moroney Targeting Caulfield Guineas With Unbeaten 3YO
Trainer Mike Moroney has confirmed the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on 11 October as the primary spring target for exciting 3YO Merion (O'Reilly-Sapphire Belle, by Danske), reports racingandsports.com.au. The unbeaten O'Reilly gelding, who was last seen winning the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) at Flemington in April, has been set on a Caulfield Guineas path by Moroney who has a high opinion of the gelding. "I'm pretty sure he'll be competitive enough as a Guineas horse," said the Flemington-based trainer. "He's one of the better three year olds I've had in a while." Moroney added, "The horse looks terrific and I couldn't be happier with him. He's really ticked every box so far. He's come back pretty relaxed and he's a big imposing bloke now, with a lot of strength about him." Moroney even thinks Merion could develop into a VRC Derby horse. "Whether he'll get the Derby trip will be the question. We'll take each race at a time but his main aim at the minute is the Caulfield Guineas." He added, "He had a jump out down the straight on Friday and looks particularly well." Merion is set to resume in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley next week.
