Arqana August Sale Day-1: Monsun Filly Fetches €1.2M
At the opening session of the Arqana August Yearling Sale at Deauville in France on Saturday, demand proved to be very strong for high quality yearlings, most notably for fillies. The sale achieved an excellent opening clearance rate of 82 per cent, with 65 of the 79 yearlings offered finding new homes. Gross turnover was up 14 per cent on last year at €16,237,000, while the average price of €249,800 was yet another indicator of the current depth of the global bloodstock market, up 15 per cent on last year's figures. The highlight on day one was a stunning filly from the final crop of Monsun who was knocked down to Tony Nerses for €1.2 million. Nerses was bidding on behalf of Saleh Al Hamaizi and Imad Al Sagar, owners of classic winner Authorized. The beautifully bred bay filly is from the Dashing Blade mare Sasuela, dam of Saturday's Gr3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes winner Seismos. Sasuela is also a sister to the Gr1-winning stallions Schiaparelli and Samum, Salve Regina, winner of the German Oaks, as well as Snawa, who is none other than the dam of star German colt Sea The Moon. The son of Sea The Stars ran out an brilliant winner of the German Derby by 11-lengths and is being aimed at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October. "She was my pick of the sale - an absolute standout," Nerses told bloodstock.racingpost.com. "Pedigrees like this don't come on the market very often - it was the best page in the catalogue. I just had to have her. We will take her back to Blue Diamond Stud in Newmarket and make a decision on a trainer after that."
