Nostradamus Wins Gr3 San Domenico Stakes

Monday, 18th August 2014

At Rosehill Gardens, Darley's multiple Gr1-winning shuttler Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado-Cappucino Bay, by Bailjumper) added a Group success when smart 3YO colt Nostradamus (Medaglia d'Oro-Leone Chiara, by Lion Hunter) scored by 0.8-length for trainers John, Wayne & Michael Hawkes in the $125,000 Gr3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Washington Heights (Commands-Demanding, by Octagonal) & Law (Denman-Lady Cat, by Sir Cat). This was the first stakes victory for Nostradamus who took his record to 2 wins from 4 starts for $148,750 earnings. Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said Nostradamus would head towards the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on 13 September. "He was a bit fresh today, but once James got him balanced he hit the line strongly," Hawkes told TVN. "He's done everything right. He's a lovely colt and obviously his value has just gone up. He'll keep improving, he wasn't full screwed down for today." Nostradamus is a half-brother to Gr1-winning sprinter Star Witness and was a $500,000 purchase by Kondouris Bloodstock at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Almavale Bloodstock. He is the fourth foal to race from Gr3-winning Lion Hunter mare Leone Chiara, a daughter of top broodmare Chiara (Last Tycoon). This is the family of Gr2-winning stallion Ferocity, multiple group-winning mare Chinchilla Rose, and Listed Darby Munro Stakes winner Chiaramonte (Redoute's Choice).
