El Roca Over Illness

Tuesday, 19th August 2014

New Zealand trainer Trent Busuttin reports that top Kiwi galloper El Roca (Fastnet Rock-Rubimill, by Rubiton) has recovered from an elevated temperature and has returned to work at his Melbourne base. "He's fine now," Busuttin told RSN. "A couple of days after he got here he had a temperature spike and was off his feed for 24 hours but we got the antibiotics into him and brought that temperature down and he's back working again." Busuttin said he was originally planning on running El Roca first-up in the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 30 August, but has had to alter his program. "You do have to be careful because it (an elevated temperature) can knock them around," he said. "We were aiming at the Memsie Stakes but first-up over 1400m in a top Gr1 race probably would be a bit tough on the horse, so we'll look to line him up early to mid-September and head towards the Rupert Clarke Stakes." He added, "I may look to trial him at the end of the week at Flemington but we'll probably just hold up and give him a gallop on Saturday and carry on from there."
