Stars Impress At Taupo Trials

Thursday, 21st August 2014

Proven Gr1 performers Sacred Star, Silent Achiever and Recite all trialled well at Taupo in New Zealand yesterday, reports NZ Racing Desk. Sacred Star (Flying Spur-Irish Nova, by O'Reilly) showed he was on target for Saturday week's Gr1 Makfi Challenge Stakes with his win in the first heat. He settled in the trail and was into the clear before the turn to finish over the top of Silent Achiever and Recite. "The track was a bit wetter than he would have liked, but he needed a good hit-out," trainer Tony Pike said. "It was similar to what he did before he won the QTC Cup." Silent Achiever (O'Reilly-Winning Spree, by Zabeel) will also resume on Saturday week with the Gr1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield to kick off her spring campaign. "I've been lucky enough at Cambridge to use the course proper, but it's been very heavy and I've been frightened to let her go so she needed that and it will do her a lot of good," trainer Roger James said. Recite (Darci Brahma-Chant, by Traditionally), who also has the Makfi on her spring agenda, made the pace and fought on for third without being pressured while New Zealand Derby winner Puccini made late ground to finish in behind the placegetters.
