Al Kazeem Wins Gr3 Winter Hill Stakes
Triple Gr1 winner Al Kazeem (Dubawi-Kazeem, by Darshaan), who proved sub-fertile when retired to The Queen's Royal Studs last year, claimed his first win since returning to competition when landing the Gr3 Winter Hill Stakes (10 furlongs) at Windsor on Saturday, reports attheraces.com. On his second start since his comeback, the 6YO son of Dubawi was too strong for Godolphin 3YO True Story (Manduro-Tanzania, by Darshaan) scoring by 0.5-length with fellow 3YO Complicit (Captain Rio-Molomo, by Barathea) a further 7-lengths back in third. Trainer Roger Charlton said: "It was a relief, I have to admit. When you have a horse who has been as good as him it would have been disappointing to see a horse beaten twice in lesser races, if you like." He added, "His owner has been incredibly patient and it has been a long haul back." Charlton said he would have a look at the feature race calendar before deciding where Al Kazeem would head next. "Where we go, how high he gets, I don't know really. I'd say that's a few lengths up on what he achieved at Newbury and we need to find that again to feature in the better races. We'll have to look at the programme book a bit." He added, "Ascot is a great track and the Qipco Champion is a fantastic race, that could be his target." The Gr1 Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) will be run on Britain's richest race day of the year, British Champions Day at Ascot on 18 October.
