Barakey Wins Listed Goodwood Sprint
At Belmont in Western Australia, former WA Rangeview Stud stallion Key Business (Success Express-Business Babe, by Bletchingly) added a black-type success when star 7YO gelding Barakey (Key Business-Dance Hi, by Key Dancer) resumed with a brilliant 1.5-length win for trainer Jim Taylor in the $100,000 Listed Goodwood Sprint (1300m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Smoko (Snitzel-London Lights, by Bletchingly) & 8YO gelding Zester (Danewin-Ranzest, by Rancher). Barakey boosted his already imposing record to 13 wins (including the Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes, Gr3 Prince Of Wales Stakes, Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes & Listed Northam Sprint Stakes) from 15 starts for $832,000 earnings. "Barakey is a great galloper," trainer Jim Taylor told The West Australian. "There were reasons for his only two defeats. He was found to have a knee fracture after running unplaced in a VRC Newmarket at Flemington. A viral infection was detected following his failure in last year's Winterbottom at Ascot..He's also had a number of other problems which have not been discussed publicly." He added, "Barakey went in to today's race without having started for nine months. He had only two trials and two fast gallops. But I'd given lots of slow work, which built-up fitness without putting pressure on his legs." Barakey is being aimed at the $750,000 weight-for-age Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on 22 November.
