Close Hatches Wins US Gr1 Personal Ensign Handicap

At Saratoga racecourse in the US, star 4YO mare Close Hatches (First Defence-Rising Tornado, by Storm Cat) scored by 5-lengths for trainer Bill Mott in the US$500,000 Gr1 Personal Ensign Handicap (9 furlongs) for 3YO+ fillies and mares, over fellow 4YO mare Fiftyshadesofhay (Pulpit-Quiet Kim, by Real Quiet) & 5YO mare Stanwyck (Empire Maker-Set Them Free, by Stop The Music). Second favourite Princess Of Sylmar weakened in the straight to finish fifth. The Juddmonte Farms-owned Close Hatches posted the fifth Gr1 success of her career to improve her boost her record to 9 wins (including the Gr1 Ogden Phipps Stakes, Gr1 Apple Blossom Handicap, Gr1Mother Goose Stakes & Gr1 Cotillion Stakes) & 2 placings (including the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff) from 12 starts for US$2,682,300 earnings. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said that Close Hatches would now head to the Gr1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on 5 October.
