Protectionist Melbourne Cup-Bound

Monday, 25th August 2014

German-bred 4YO Protectionist is on course to represent Novellist's owner-breeder Christoph Berglar in this year's Melbourne Cup after winning the Gr2 Prix Kergorlay (15 furlongs) at Deauville in France overnight, reports racingpost.com. "If everything goes right it [the Melbourne Cup] will be the target," said trainer Andrea Wohler. "That was a nice prep race because we wanted to see how he relaxed over the trip. It was a slowly-run race but he couldn't have done it easier." Protectionist (Monsun-Patineuse, by Peintre Celebre) scored by 1.5-lengths over Fly With Me (Beat Hollow-Bird Of Paradise, by Highest Honor) and stable-mate Altano (Galileo-Alanda, by Lando). The Prix Kergorlay is the same race that Swettenham Stud's Americain won en route to his victory in the 2010 Melbourne Cup.
