V.E. Day Wins US Gr1 Travers Stakes

Monday, 25th August 2014

At Saratoga racecourse in the US, 3YO colt V.E. Day (English Channel-California Sunset, by Deputy Minister) caused an upset at odds of 40-1 when scoring by a nose for trainer Jim Jerkens (see vision below) in the US$1.25 million Gr1 Travers Stakes (10 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colt and stable-mate Wicked Strong (Hard Spun-Moyne Abbey, by Charismatic) & 3YO colt and Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist (Tapit-Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony). This was the first Gr1 victory for V.E. Day who took his record to 4 wins (including the Listed Curlin Stakes) and 1 placing from 6 starts for US$829,010 earnings. The last time a trainer ran 1-2 in the Travers was 2004, when Hall of Famer Nick Zito saddled Birdstone  and runner-up The Cliff's Edge. "It means an awful lot. It's unreal," Jerkens said. "I just feel bad for Wicked Strong; that's the only thing, he ran so hard. (But) I'll take it," Jerkens told bloodhorse.com.
