Gr1 Goal For Vinnie Eagle

Tuesday, 26th August 2014

Promising Kiwi 3YO Vinnie Eagle (I Am Invincible-Sweet Maggie, by Danehill Dancer) will be aimed at the Gr1 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas this spring, reports NZ Racing Desk. Trainer Tony Pike says he will follow a similar program to that which he used to great effect back in 2012 with former stable star Sacred Falls. Unbeaten in both his New Zealand starts, including the Gr3 Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, Vinnie Eagle hasn't raced since he was unplaced in the Inglis Classic at Randwick in January. "Unfortunately, he injured a knee in Sydney, but he's coming up really well and weather dependant he will trial at Avondale on September 2," Pike said. "He'll then kick off in the Northland Breeders' Stakes and follow a similar path to what Sacred Falls did a few years ago." Sacred Falls won the Listed Westbury Stud-sponsored event at Ruakaka before landing the Gr2 Hawke's Bay Guineas, Gr3 Sarten Memorial and NZ 2,000 Guineas. Although untested beyond six furlongs, Pike is confident the son of I Am Invincible will handle more ground. "As a three-year-old I think he will – he is more of a sprinter than a miler. But against his own age group he should get the mile," he said. "We'll have more of an idea after the Hawke's Bay Guineas and the Sarten." The New Zealand 2,000 Guineas will be run at Riccarton Park on 8 November.
