Shared Belief Wins US Gr1 Pacific Classic

Tuesday, 26th August 2014

Shared Belief (Candy Ride-Common Hope, by Storm Cat), last year's undefeated champion US 2YO, kept his perfect record intact when registering yet another brilliant victory in the US$1 million Gr1 Pacific Classic (10 furlongs) at Del Mar on Sunday, reports bloodhorse.com. The exceptional 3YO extended his unbeaten sequence to six when scoring easily by 3-lengths over fellow 3YO Toast Of New York (Thewayyouare-Claire Soleil, by Syncline) & 4YO Imperative (Bernardini-Call Her, by Caller I.D.). The win earned the Jerry Hollendorfer trained gelding an automatic entry into the Breeder's Cup Classic and boosted his career earnings to US$1,372,200.  Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, the long-time rider of Game On Dude, made the right decision when he abandoned the eight-time Gr1 winner to ride Shared Belief, whom he described as racing's next "superstar". Smith told bloodhorse.com: "He's a special horse. I heard someone say this might be the coming out of a superstar. I think now this horse deserves that accolade. I'll tell you what: he's as good a young horse as I've sat on in a while." Game On Dude, shooting for back-to-back Pacific Classic's, battled on gamely for fourth after being caught up in a speed duel created by 25-1 shot Mystery Train. "Longshots are always the biggest danger to a horse like Game on Dude," trainer Bob Baffert said. "They always want to go after him. I hate to see that. I think he was gonna' win if they hadn't gone after him like that. It's frustrating to train a horse and get him ready for his biggest race and have a horse who has no shot to win take that chance away." Shared Belief's end of season target is the Breeder's Cup Championships where he will earn a US$1 million bonus if he can win the BC Classic at Santa Anita in November. The bonus is for any horse that can win the Los Alamitos Derby, Pacific Classic, and BC Classic.
