Sangster To Resume At Ruakaka

Wednesday, 27th August 2014

Top Kiwi stayer Sangster (Savabeel-Quinta Special, by Spectrum) will resume in an open 1200m handicap at Ruakaka this weekend ahead of a planned trip to Australia for the Melbourne spring carnival, reports NZ Racing Desk. But the three-time Gr1 winner will first attempt to add to his Gr1 tally on home soil by contesting the Gr1 Spring Classic at Hastings on 4 October. "He's nominated for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and we've always thought he could be competitive on his Auckland Cup form," said co-trainer Trent Busuttin. "If he came out and won the Spring Classic then we would look at running him at Caulfield. He's a six-year-old and he's been lightly-raced, it just seems like he's been around forever because he won as a spring three-year-old." He added, "Both cups were won last year by six-year-olds so we'll be playing it by ear with him and there are other options like the Sandown Classic." The Ruakaka sprint has attracted a quality field that includes fellow Gr1 winners Puccini and Albany Reunion who will also use the race as a launching pad for an Australian spring campaign.
