Shadwell Unveil Impressive Debut Winner
Beautifully bred colt Mihany, by Redoute's Choice out of top producer Snowdrift, made an auspicious start to his career when scoring a stylish win in a 1300m maiden plate on Geelong's synthetic track yesterday. The 3YO is trained by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and races in the world renowned blue and white epaulette silks of Sheikh Hamden's Shadwell Stud. Despite exhibiting signs of greenness, Mihany showed a good turn of foot to score by 1.25-lengths over stable-mate and fellow debutant Firehouse Rock (Fastnet Rock) with the Mark Kavanagh-trained Avalon Downs (Churchill Downs) finishing third. Stable representative Bruno Rouge-Serrett said both colts possessed above average ability and that connections were hoping they could measure up to stakes company in the spring. "The winner trialled very well so it was good to see him bring that form to the races," said Rouge-Serrett. "The second horse performed well too." He added, "We think both these horses can progress from here and hopefully step up in the spring sometime." Mihany was a $600,000 purchase by Shadwell Australia at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Cressfield. He is the ninth foal to race from the French bred Snowdrift (Polish Precedent), dam of Gr1-winner Snowland, stakes-winning sires Snippetson and Freeze, and Gr2-winning filly Portillo. Other family members include Vinery's Gr1-winning stallion Myboycharlie, who is out of a half-sister to Snowdrift, as well as Gr1 Fillies' Mile winner Icing and her dual Gr1-winning son Al Hareb.
