Starspangledbanner Colt Tops DBS Day 1

Wednesday, 27th August 2014

The recent deeds of the progeny of Australian-bred sire Starspangledbanner, headlined by The Wow Signal's victory in Sunday's Gr1 Prix Morny, ensured that his only offering at yesterday's opening session of the DBS Yearling Sale in the UK would be in high demand and so it proved, with Castletown Quarry Stud's grey Starspangledbanner colt (Lot 193) selling to Qatar racing manager David Redvers for £230,000 after a lengthy bidding dual with the Hong Kong Jockey Club. "He was the standout of the sale," Redvers told bloodstock.racingpost.com. "They're not making many Starspangledbanners and this was a colt with great presence and action as well as a good page." The colt is the first foal out of the King's Best mare Ultimate Best, a half-sister to Group winners Barney McGrew, National Park and Film Script. Starspangledbanner has another colt going through the ring on day two as Lot 478. A strong finish to the opening day of the sale saw last year's Day 1 figures well beaten, with the opening day's average finishing on £37,610 - 19 per cent higher than 2013.
