Divan Salutes At Sandown

Thursday, 28th August 2014

Highly regarded colt Divan looks set for a successful campaign after opening his account in the Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Plate (1400m) at Sandown yesterday. The 3YO son of Zabeel, who is out of 7-time Gr1-winning Kiwi mare Seachange, is being aimed at the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on 11 October and also holds an entry in the WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley a fortnight later. The Lloyd Williams-owned colt created a big impression when storming home from last to claim third in the Listed ANZAC Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in April and connections will be hoping he can now build upon his maiden win by graduating to Gr1 company over the spring. "He's beautifully put together. As soon as you throw your leg over you can tell he's got a touch of class," winning jockey Damien Oliver told TVN. "He was very fresh having not raced for a while. He's done a really good job considering he was first-up over 1400m and had to come off a ridiculously slow pace. I'm sure there is a lot of improvement to come." He added, "I think he's got a good future. When he learns to relax a little bit and gets some racing under his belt, I'm sure he's going to make a very good horse." Divan was a $500,000 purchase by James Bester at the 2013 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of The Oaks Stud.
