Almalad Definite Saturday Starter

Friday, 29th August 2014

Gai Waterhouse has confirmed that exciting colt Almalad (Al Maher-Ilhaam, by Secret Savings) will open his spring campaign in tomorrow's Gr3 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens despite the anticipated heavy ground, reports racingnetwork.com.au. The unbeaten son of Al Maher, who registered his maiden top-flight success when winning the Gr1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm during the Brisbane winter carnival, is held in the highest regard by Waterhouse who is aiming him at the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate in Melbourne. Adrian Bott, racing manager for Waterhouse, confirmed yesterday that Almalad would run on Saturday. "While he won't be at his best distance range, quite short of it, Gai is extremely happy with his condition," Bott said. "He will be a lot better over 1400 and 1600 metres but he has to run on Saturday and he'll run very well, we feel." Almalad is expected to contest the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose on 13 September before travelling to Melbourne for his two primary spring targets.
