No First-Up Heroics From Super Cool
Mark Kavanagh has warned against expecting too much from Gr1 winner Super Cool (Fastnet Rock-Queen Mother, by Kingmambo) when he returns to racing in Saturday's Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, reports racingvictoria.net.au. The Fastnet Rock gelding finished third behind superstar mare and stable-mate Atlantic Jewel in the 2013 edition of Memsie, but this year must contend with a lengthy 10-month absence from the track. Flemington-based Kavanagh is happy with the way the 2013 Australian Cup winner is progressing in the build-up to his spring campaign, but said he faced a much tougher task sneaking into the placings this year. "He hasn't raced since last spring and he's nowhere near as forward as he was last year," Kavanagh said. And although none of this year's rivals can boast the credentials of Atlantic Jewel, the race has nonetheless attracted a top-class field with the likes of Silent Achiever, Boban, Moment Of Change, Puissance de Lune, Messene and Dissident all lining up on Saturday. "With this race going to a Group 1, you've got some 1400-metre specialists going there," Kavanagh said referring to the Memsie being elevated to Gr1 status last year. "He would need a run, maybe two before he does anything. But he'll probably finish it off strong out in the middle somewhere. He's nowhere near cranked up yet, so he'll improve on what he does."
