At Ellerslie in New Zealand, dual Gr1-winning former Coolmore shuttler Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill-L'On Vite, by Secretariat) celebrated a Classic success when 3YO colt Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor-Centafit, by Centaine) scored by 1-length for trainers Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman in the NZ$750,000 Gr1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) for 3YOs, over 3YO geldings Volkstok'n'Barrell (Tavistock-Volkster, by Volksraad) & Sound Proposition (Savabeel-Ebony Babe, by Ebony Grosve). This was the maiden Gr1 triumph for Mongolian Khan who took his record to 6 wins (including the Gr2 Avondale Guineas, Gr2 Waikato Guineas & Listed Champion Stakes Prelude) from 7 starts for NZ$625,500 earnings. Mongolian Khan was a $220,000 purchase by the Mongolian Rider Horse Group at the 2013 NZ Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale from the draft of Regal Farm.
