Shamal Wind Wins Gr1 Oakleigh Plate

Monday, 2nd March 2015

At Caulfield in Melbourne, triple Gr1-winning former Darley shuttler Dubawi (Dubai Millennium-Zomaradah, by Deploy) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 5YO mare Shamal Wind (Dubawi-Firemaid, by Machiavellian) scored by 0.75-length for trainer Robert Smerdon in the $400,000 Gr1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) for 3YO+, over 4YO entire Under The Louvre (Excellent Art-Barcelona Girl, by Noverre) & 4YO gelding Fast 'n' Rocking (Fastnet Rock-For the Good Times, by Hennessy). In registering her maiden Gr1 victory, Shamal Wind took her record to 8 wins (including the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (twice) & Listed Heritage Stakes) and 8 placings (including the Gr2 Centrebet Classic, Gr2 Caulfield Sprint Handicap - twice & Gr3 GH Mumm Stakes - twice) from 24 starts for $832,975 earnings. "She deserves to win a race like this, she has tried so hard all her life," winning jockey Dwayne Dunn said. "We didn't have the best of runs in transit to the home bend, but she really sprinted hard for me. She has a good short, sharp sprint and that is what she showed." Shamal Wind was a $55,000 purchase by Aquanita Racing at the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Widden Stud.
