Gold Cup Next For Kawi

Tuesday, 3rd March 2015

Trainer Allan Sharrock is considering the Gr2 Awapuni Cup as the next target for rising star Kawi, reports NZ Racing Desk. "Theoretically, the Awapuni Gold Cup is the right race to have a go at, but it will be six weeks between runs," Sharrock said. "That's where we will probably go and have a 1400 metre trial at Foxton before that." He added, "If I did deviate from that plan it would be the Easter Handicap (Gr1), but I would be a bit worried about the weight he'd get with his rating so I am leaning toward the Gold Cup." The 4YO son of Savabeel has built an imposing record to date winning 6 of his 12 starts, including the Listed Anniversary Handicap at Trentham on 17 January before a last-start victory in the Gr3 Taranaki Cup on his home track. Among those he vanquished that day was Iamishwara, who has since come out and won the Gr1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic at Otaki. Although Sharrock isn't in any rush to tackle elite company with Kawi just yet, he does have the Melbourne spring carnival in mind as a longer term goal. "There's plenty of time for that and I've never been in any hurry with him," Sharrock said. "I want to take him along slowly and we'll be looking at the first two legs of the Triple Crown at Hastings next season." He added, "If he could win one of those, and there's every chance he can on what I've seen – I won one with I Do and he's right there with her – then that would qualify him for a race like the Cox Plate, but there's a lot of water to go under the bridge yet."
