Mongolian Straight To ATC Derby
New Zealand Derby winner Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor-Centafit, by Centaine) may go straight into the Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on 4 April without another prep run, reports NZ Racing Desk. "We haven't decided yet, but he didn't have a run for seven weeks when he won first up over 2000m," co-trainer Murray Baker said. "He's a tough horse and a really good stayer - the faster they go the better it suits him." Andrew Forsman, who prepares the Classic winner with Baker, told theinformant.co.nz: "He's super and he's bounced through the race really well." He added, "He's a tough horse and he does tend to come through his races in great order. He'll be out in the paddock for four days, then we'll bring him back in and get him ready for Sydney." Baker and Forsman prepare Mongolian Khan for the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry (NZ) Ltd, whose principal Lang Lin was on course at Ellerslie with a sizeable Chinese delegation for Derby Day. Lin has already purchased upwards of 600 New Zealand-bred horses to go to China and Saturday's success is likely to be a catalyst for further investment.
