Rubick To Resume In Challenge Stakes
Trainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed that talented young sprinter Rubick (Encosta de Lago-Sliding Cube, by Rock of Gibraltar) will resume in the Gr2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday, reports horseracing.com. Rubick, who is part-owned by Coolmore Stud and David Raphael, hasn't raced since finishing 12th behind Brazen Beau in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes in the spring, but Ryan is confident of bold first-up display after the 3YO impressed in a recent barrier trial. "I was very pleased with his barrier trial and he has done everything right since," Ryan said. "It's going to be a pretty good field but I'm happy with what I've got." Being by Encosta de Lago out of a three-quarter sister to Redoute's Choice, a Gr1 victory would make Rubick very attractive to broodmare owners when he eventually retires to stud. Consequently Ryan has his sights on the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on 4 April, but says a start will depend on the colt's form leading up to the race. "We will wait until after we see how he comes up before we decide whether to take on the big names in the TJ Smith," he said.
