Shared Belief Top Weight For Big Cap'
Shared Belief, regarded by many as North America's best racehorse, will be asked to carry his greatest impost ever after being allotted top weight of 125 pounds (56.69kg) in Saturday's US$1 million Gr1 Santa Anita Handicap (10 furlongs) at Santa Anita Park, reports horseracingnation.com. "I don't think Jerry had any complaints," trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's assistant Dan Ward said of the burden. "The racing secretary told us Shared Belief is the best horse in the country," Ward said, adding that the disparity in weights from high to low is more significant than the actual weight assigned and carried by the high weight. Shared Belief, the once-beaten champion 2YO male of 2103 who resumed with a dominant victory over Horse of the Year California Chrome in the Gr2 San Antonio Invitational on 7 February, has never carried more than 123 pounds (55.79kg) in his 10 lifetime starts (nine of them victories).
