Criterion To Sprint Well Fresh

Wednesday, 4th March 2015

Trainer David Hayes is expecting Criterion (Sebring-Mica's Pride, by Bite the Bullet) to sprint well fresh when he resumes in the Gr1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on Saturday, reports horseracing.com.au. Better known as a stayer with Gr1 victories in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Australian Derby (2400m) last year, Criterion delighted connections in an exhibition gallop at Sandown a fortnight ago suggesting a bold first-up showing is on the cards. "His gallop was terrific and we have taken a view to present him a bit fresh on Saturday," Hayes told Sky's Racing HQ. "We want to peak him hopefully for the Queen Elizabeth, but I think that he will sprint well fresh. He is a classy horse, he has a huge action and a good attitude." He added, "I think that he might race better on the Sydney leg, even though he is very effective in Melbourne, but I think that in Sydney he is brilliant. Hopefully he will sprint well fresh." Criterion will be having his first start since finishing third behind Designs On Rome and Military Attack in the Gr1 Hong Kong Cup in December.
