Rebel Looking Likely for Brandi

Thursday, 5th March 2015

Champion US filly Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway-Charming, by Seeking the Gold) appears likely to take on the boys in the Gr2 Rebel Stakes on 14 March after trainer D Wayne Lukas decided not to enter her in the Honeybee Stakes for 3YO fillies on Saturday, reports bloodhorse.com. Take Charge Brandi was expected to contest the Gr3 Honeybee after Lukas informed officials she would be entered for the race, but the Rebel (8.5 furlongs), a major Kentucky Derby prep race, now appears the goal. Owner Willis Horton said it had been "pretty much" decided that the filly would run in the Rebel and that Lukas was looking for a rider. "I really want to find out how good she is," Horton said. "If she can beat the boys, I think her better chance of doing that is early rather than later in the year, because the boys will start really gaining. I'm just wanting to take a chance on beating the boys. I'm just trying to build her resume up." A top placing in the Rebel could give Take Charge Brandi an opportunity to start in the Kentucky Derby, as the Rebel offers Derby points to the top four placegetters (50-20-10-5). However, Lukas has maintained since December that the star filly would be aimed at the Kentucky Oaks, not the Derby. Bred in Kentucky, Take Charge Brandi is out of a daughter of US Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, dam of 2013 Champion 3YO Male Will Take Charge.
