Marky Mark Spot On For Diamond

Friday, 6th March 2015

Moira Murdoch has given Marky Mark (Makfi-My My Maree, by Testa Rossa) a favourable report leading into Saturday's Gr1 Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie, reports NZ Racing Desk. The unbeaten Makfi gelding hasn't raced since his courageous win in the Gr3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year's Day, but Murdoch is delighted with his condition ahead of two planned Gr1 tests this autumn. "We gave him two weeks off after the Eclipse Stakes and he's worked back up nicely," Murdoch said. "He's done really well. He's done plenty of work and we took him along to Ellerslie to gallop last Tuesday which has really brought him along." She added, "We wanted him fresh into the 1200m of this Saturday's race and that should have him spot on for 1400m in the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes." TAB bookmakers opened Marky Mark as a $4.80 equal favourite with Gr2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes winner Serena Miss in an even market for the Diamond Stakes headed by Dal Cielo at $4.20 and Rocanto at $4.40. Leith Innes retains the ride and will press forward to take up a handy position from barrier two, according to Murdoch. "He was very professional in the Eclipse, whereas some of the others did a few things wrong. He hasn't raced since then, while the others have had a bit more experience since and that has probably leveled the playing field," Murdoch said. "I respect every one of the two-year-olds in the race but our horse is as good as I can get him." Murdoch trains Marky Mark for breeders Brendan and Jo Lindsay, having also trained his Gr2-winning dam My My Maree (Testa Rossa) for the couple. Marky Mark is the first foal from My My Maree, a full-sister to Gr1 South Australian Derby winner Testafiable.
