Dal Cielo Wins Gr1 Diamond Stakes

Monday, 9th March 2015

At Ellerslie in New Zealand,  Little Avondale Stud's 2007 Champion Italian 3YO Sprinter Per Incanto (Street Cry-Pappa Reale, by Indian Ridge) celebrated his first Gr1 winner when 2YO gelding Dal Cielo (Per Incanto-Cent From Heaven, by Centaine) scored by 1.25-lengths for trainers Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman in the NZ$200,000 Gr1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) for 2YOs, over 2YO colts Battle Time (Battle Paint-Lady of Oakview, by Diamond Express) & Rocanto (Per Incanto-Romantic Liaisons, by Danasinga). This was the first stakes victory for Dal Cielo who took his record to 2 wins and 2 placings (including the Listed (R) Karaka Million) from 4 starts for NZ$222,500 earnings. Co-trainer Murray Baker indicated that Dal Cielo could head to Sydney for the Gr1 Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) on the opening day of The Championships (4 April). "He's a very good colt this guy," Baker told NZ Racing Desk. "We'll probably have a go at the Manawatu Sires' Produce and he's also nominated for the Sires at Randwick, but that's a big step up again." Dal Cielo was a NZ$95,000 purchase by Bruce Perry Bloodstock at the 2014 NZ Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale from the draft of Little Avondale Stud. With Little Avondale Stud's Sam Williams, Perry played a leading role in securing Street Cry stallion Per Incanto and also oversees the thoroughbred interests of Lib Petagna, who races Dal Cielo with the Perry-managed Homebush Syndicate. "It's a great result for Sam, the stallion and the team that owns the horse," Perry said. "It's a massive boost for a first season sire with Rocanto running third as well."
