Vancouver Wins Gr2 Todman Stakes

Monday, 9th March 2015

At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Darley's multiple Gr1-winning shuttler Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado-Cappucino Bay, by Bailjumper) added a Group success when 2YO colt Vancouver (Medaglia d'Oro-Skates, by Danehill) scored an easy 3.3-length win for trainer Gai Waterhouse in the $300,000 Gr2 Todman Stakes (1200m) for 2YO c&g, over fellow 2YO colts Furnaces (Exceed and Excel-Heat of the Fire, by Strategic) & Headwater (Exceed and Excel-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky). This was a brilliant performance by Vancouver who is now a $2.80 favourite for the $3.5 million Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on 21 March. "He is the most dominant colt in Australia," Gai Waterhouse told TVN. "He was scintillating the way he ate up his rivals today and I'm looking forward to him in the Golden Slipper." Vancouver, who was purchased by Waterhouse and James Harron Bloodstock for $185,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud, took his record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 Canonbury Stakes & Listed Breeders' Plate) from 3 starts for $332,500 earnings. The beautifully bred colt is a half-brother to Gr1 winner Juste Momente (Giant's Causeway) and Listed winner Captain Coltish (Fusaichi Pegasus) from the Danehill mare Skates, a grey daughter of top-class racemare Skating. A winner of the Gr1 Doncaster Handicap and Gr1 Coolmore Classic, Skating (At Talaq) has gone on to be just as successful at stud producing Gr3 Skyline Stakes winner Murtajill, Canonbury Stakes winner Bradbury's Luck, and June Stakes winner Sunset Run.
