Wandjina Wins Gr1 Australian Guineas
At Flemington in Melbourne, Arrowfield Stud's Gr1-winning & dual Gr1-placed stallion Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) celebrated a Gr1 success when well bred 3YO colt Wandjina (Snitzel-La Bamba, by Last Tycoon) scored by 0.2-length for trainer Gai Waterhouse in the $500,000 Gr1 Australian Guineas (1600m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Alpine Eagle (High Chaparral-Zephyria, by Zabeel) & Stratum Star (Stratum-Purely Spectacular, by Pins). This was the first top flight victory for Wandjina who took his record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 CS Hayes Stakes) and 1 placing (the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas) from 12 starts for $558,800 earnings. Wandjina was a $1 million purchase by James Harron on behalf of Dr Edmund Bateman and his wife Belinda at the 2013 Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud. "He's a horse we have had huge belief in, he's a magnificent type with a great pedigree, it's great to see him win a Group One," Harron told TVN. "We set out with a plan about five years and they've built-up an incredible bloodstock portfolio of broodmares. We've got Foxwedge having his first yearlings now, and this is the second stallion prospect for them...it's very exciting." He added, "He's an oil painting. He's an incredible looking horse. Edmund and Belinda are very involved. They came out to the sales and we all looked at him and fell in love with him." Wandjina is the ninth foal of the Last Tycoon mare La Bamba and is a sibling to Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint winner Inspiration (Flying Spur) as well as stakes winners Lucky Unicorn and Provence (both by Redoute's Choice).
