Precautionary Sydney Entry For Chautauqua
Team Hawkes is erring on the side of caution by nominating Gr1 Newmarket Handicap favourite Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) for a lower grade sprint in Sydney this weekend, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said that it was standard stable practice to nominate horses for both Melbourne and Sydney, hence the reason Chautauqua's name appears among the entries for the Gr3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. He said Chautauqua will definitely run in the $1 million Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday, barring any unforeseen circumstances. "Who knows what might happen? The track might be under water," Hawkes said. "He's in Melbourne, he's going to run in the Newmarket. We nominate horses in Melbourne and Sydney all the time, we put them in those races because you can't put them in after the event." Hawkes said that Chautauqua, who resumed an excellent second in the Gr2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Flemington three weeks ago, had been kept up to the mark with a jump-out at Flemington last Friday. "We just wanted to keep him fresh. He could run in the Doncaster - we're just using the straight to his advantage because he's a great straight horse," he said. Chautauqua is a $2.70 favourite with the TAB for Saturday's Newmarket ahead of Lankan Rupee ($3.40), Brazen Beau, ($5) and Terravista ($6).
