Caped Crusader Derby Bound

Thursday, 12th March 2015

Well related colt Caped Crusader (O'Reilly-Aria, by Centaine) will be aimed at the Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) after scoring an impressive front-running victory in the Ranvet Handicap (1800m) at Randwick yesterday. The New Zealand bred 3YO looked a smart stayer in the making when bounding clear for a strong 2-length win over Rustic Melody and Saddler's Flame. "He's a very exciting three-year-old," trainer Gai Waterhouse told racenet.com.au. "He'll go to the Tulloch then onto the Derby." She added, "I stepped him up sharply in distance today as I wanted to get him here onto the big Randwick track after he was beaten first-up at Canterbury. He's a horse that needs to get into his rhythm and Adam (jockey Adam Hyeronimus) rode him perfectly." By Champion New Zealand sire O'Reilly, Caped Crusader is a half-brother to Gr2 Brisbane Cup winner Floria (Savabeel) and hails from the family of Gr1-winning Kiwi mares Solveig and Soliloquy. A NZ$340,000 purchase by James Harron and Round Table Racing at the 2013 NZ Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale, Caped Crusader has now won 2 of his 3 starts for $47,005 earnings.
