Encouraging Signs From Costa Viva

Thursday, 12th March 2015

Gr1 winner Costa Viva (Encosta de Lago-Vivacious Spirit, by Bel Esprit) received a pass mark from her trainer Jason Bridgman at the Rotorua trials this week, reports NZ Racing Desk. The 4YO mare has struggled to recapture the form that saw her win the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas two years ago, but Bridgman took plenty of encouragement from her second in a 1000m barrier trial on Tuesday. "It was the bob of the head and they went pretty hard with seven lengths back to the third horse," Bridgman said. "Sir Andrew was the only other Group winner in the field and, if she was going to get beaten, he was the only one we could have accepted getting beaten by." He added, "She seems back to herself, but I might give her another trial before we decide on her future. She's still quite big in condition." The Te Akau Racing-owned Costa Viva provided top Australian stallion Bel Esprit with his first Gr1 success as a broodmare sire when winning the 2013 edition of the NZ 1,000 Guineas at Riccarton.
