Distance Query For Thump

Friday, 13th March 2015

Trainer Kris Lees says he is confident of a forward showing from talented mare Thump (Red Ransom-Oomph, by Flying Spur) in Saturday's Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill, although the Newcastle trainer does admit to a slight distance concern. Lees also has New Zealand-bred mare Hera engaged in the $600,000 fillies and mares feature, but says Thump is his pick of the duo. "Thump would be the major chance of the two on recent form," Lees told RSN radio yesterday. Thump resumed with an impressive victory in the Gr3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on 14 February, before finishing an encouraging sixth (beaten 2.3-lengths) behind Godolphin's highly promising import It's Somewhat in the Gr3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) last start. "She seems to have come back really well. It was a nice effort two weeks ago. She's a little doubt at the trip but she'll put herself in the right spot and I think she's got a great chance," Less said. "It's probably not the best Coolmore field we've seen outside of possibly an outstanding three-year-old (First Seal)." He added, "As I said there's a little doubt about the 1500 metres but she's a Gr2 winner at 1400m, so I think if she can get the right type of run she can be in the money."
