Friday Odd-Spot: Sydney F1 Grand Prix On Radar
Sydney's fledgling The Championships, set to wow racing fans during its forthcoming second renewal, is a long shot to have another major racing event occurring during the autumn in the harbour city. According to reports overnight in dailytelegraph.com.au, NSW Premier Mike Baird has announced that, if re-elected later this month, he will make "an audacious bid to bring the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix to Sydney and possibly race it across the Harbour Bridge"… If successful, the attempt to snatch the showpiece motor racing event away from Melbourne would require a minimum $180 million commitment from NSW tax payers, and would potentially provide Sydney with a Friday public holiday "to get in the spirit". If becoming a reality, Sydney's first hosting of the Grand Prix wouldn't be until 2020. No decision will be made until 2018, leaving locals with plenty of time to dream about being part of a global event akin to that in Monaco or Singapore. The Cahill Expressway might finally get a chance to live up to its moniker.
