Hong Kong Superstar Chases Fourth Gr1

Friday, 13th March 2015

On Sunday at Sha Tin, Hong Kong's latest superstar Able Friend looks likely to record a fourth Gr1 victory when he contests the Gr1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup. According to racing.scmp.com, the Australian-bred Able Friend (Shamardal-Ponte Piccolo, by Volksraad) is already the highest rated horse in Hong Kong's history, a benchmark applied by both local and international ratings experts. His trainer John Moore enthused, "This horse now has an enormous public following. And it's something Hong Kong needs - that star - the horse they can make banners for, come to the races and wave their flags and support. For the people who really love equine stars, here is a horse they can get behind." There will be no easy kill for Able Friend on Sunday, with Sydney's The Championships Gr1 winner, Irish raider Gordon Lord Byron, Divine Calling and Gold Fun among his foes. Able Friend's main target is the HK$14 million Champions Mile in two month's time. He has already won the Gr1 Stewards' Cup (see below), Gr1 Hong Kong Mile & Gr1 Hong Kong Classic Mile.
