Plucky Belle Wins Gr1 Coolmore Classic
At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Gr1-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed Vinery Stud stallion Mossman (Success Express-Lichen Lady, by Twig Moss) celebrated a Gr1 success when 6YO mare Plucky Belle (Mossman-Winning Belle, by Zabeel) scored by 0.1-length for trainer Peter Moody in the $600,000 Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) for 3YO+ f&m, over 3YO filly First Seal (Fastnet Rock-Episode, by Scenic) & 5YO mare Diamond Drille (Al Maher-Damzelle Pedrille, by Zoffany). This was the first top-flight victory for Plucky Belle who took her record to 5 wins (including the Gr3 Lavazza Short Black) and 7 placings (including the Gr3 Nivison Stakes & Gr2 Millie Fox Stakes) from 25 starts for $745,983 earnings. Bred and owned by the Esplin family, Plucky Belle is out of Gr2 Queensland Guineas winner Winning Belle and descends from the successful Belle Fox (NZ) family of New Zealand. The disappointment of the race was highly regarded filly First Seal, who finished a narrow second after enduring a wide trip for much of the race. However, despite the tough run, First Seal showed that she is perhaps overrated in that she was probably still entitled to defeat what many perceived as one of the weakest Coolmore field's in years.
