Savaria Wins Gr1 New Zealand Oaks

Monday, 16th March 2015

At Trentham in New Zealand, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winning stallion Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) celebrated a Classic success when talented 3YO filly Savaria (Savabeel-Amathea, by O'Reilly) scored by .75-length for trainer Roydon Bergerson in the NZ$300,000 Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) for 3YO fillies, over fellow 3YO fillies Platinum Witness (California Dane-Chartreuse, by St. Petersburg) & Charmont (High Chaparral-Martique, by Danehill). This was the first Gr1 victory for Savaria who took her record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 Lowland Stakes) and 2 placings from 6 starts for NZ$223,800 earnings. Savaria was purchased by Des and Kay Fleming for $110,000 at the 2013 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Bluegables Farm. The Flemings have been breeding thoroughbreds for more than three decades, but changed tack when they went to Karaka in 2013 and secured Savaria, reports NZ Racing Desk. "She's a damn good filly and from day one I said to Des that she was something special," trainer Roydon Bergerson said. "She's proved that today – she's one out of the box."
